Q RRJ Discussion One Reminder: Guidelines for weekly Reflection Posts and Responses: Throughout the semester you will engage in asynchronous threaded discussions to discuss what you have learned and how to apply it in your own research. Here are the criteria for the reflection/responses. Minimum 500 words for the initial post and 250 for each response; use the same terminology found in the genre; answer the prompts below, and respond to at least two classmates’ posts. Make sure all your posts are free from grammatical, spelling, and mechanical errors. Use APA in-text citation when citing material from the text. Make sure to address each prompt. To earn full credit: Discussion posts and responses to classmates' are completed on time. I suggest that you use a Microsoft word document to write your post and then copy and paste it directly into the discussion thread. Do not use attachments for the discussion posts. The purpose of genre reflections is to provide you with practice on examining different genres and the use of rhetorical conventions. These RRJ discussions are aimed to help you develop the course’s learning outcomes: Critical thinking and reading (visual, audio) formats as well—To think, read, and write analytically and reflectively; address specific, immediate rhetorical situations and their effects on individuals and communities; and, read (examine) a diverse range of texts (visual, audio) and apply these texts (visual, audio) to different audiences, contexts, and situations such as advocating for issues. ________________________________________ Here is the reflection topic for this week: The first major assignment is analyzing genres. There are three categories of the three types of genres: Oral, Typography, and Iconography. (In order to help students gain a better understanding of the different types of genres we will begin with analyzing a speech, which falls under the genre of Oral: Public speaking. Use the guidelines for the Genre analysis assignment. We are only analyzing one genre; whereas, the Genre Assignment will require for students to analyze two different genres. Analyze Steve Jobs speech using the following criteria. (Adapted from FYC e-book: pp. 235-236). Audience and purpose: Provide a brief introduction to the speech. Who is the intended audience or discourse community? What is the purpose of the information presented in the genre? (for example: to inform, to persuade, or to entertain?) How does the audience tie in with the purpose? Rhetorical Issues: How are the rhetorical appeals used to convey the speaker’s message? How does the speech help establish credibility (or attempt to establish) its credibility with the audience? What emotions are the speech attempting to evoke from its audience? What types of evidence or rational information are used to support claims? How does the speaker connect to the community he is addressing? Structure and delivery: How is the information organized to convey the speaker’s message? Does the use of a speech create more freedom to express what it needs to conveyed? Does the structure facilitate its purpose? Conclusion and synthesis: (Reflection) Do you think the Steve Job’s speech achieved its purpose? Do you think the speech was effective in conveying the message? Offer final comments on the impact of the speech on discourse, the targeted discourse community or communities the speech impacts.
